Sri Lanka is considered as an agricultural country and primarily dependent on the agricultural sector for her foreign exchange. Traditionally tea, rubber and coconut represented major part of Sri Lankan foreign exchange inflows and this will be continuing to future also. However, recent years’ trends show minor crops like spices, cinnamon, pepper, coffee, ayurveda drinks, seeds, organic foods and essential oil have been playing major role in Sri Lanka’s agricultural exports.
Sri Lanka is the traditional exporter of spices and tea to the world market, though in small quantities compared to world standard. However, in the last couple of decades’ spices have become the main cash income business of number of farmers in the major spice growing areas in our country. The spices grown in Sri Lanka according to the local economic importance are cinnamon, cardamoms, pepper, chillies and tea. While as a group they appear to be concentrated around the intermediate and wet zones, more specifically cinnamon is found around the low country wet zone, cardamoms in the upcountry wet zone and mid and upcountry intermediate zones and pepper in the mid country -wet-zone and tea in the upcountry, mid country and low country.
